What You Should Know About Driving in Germany

Mercedes SLIf you are like many Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts, you may dream of driving your favorite Mercedes over the sleek highways of its native Germany. The countryside is beautiful and the roads well-maintained, making this goal quite realistic. It is not difficult to rent a Mercedes in Germany, but there are a few things you should know in order to make the most of your driving experience.

Renting or Leasing
In general, you must be over the age of 21 to rent a car in Germany. You must have a valid credit card, and insurance is required. An international driving permit is not technically required in order to drive in Germany, but may be required by the rental agency.

For stays of 17 days or more, you may want to consider leasing instead. You will be provided with a brand new car, and full insurance is usually included in the price. You must be at least 18 and hold a valid credit card. You may need an international driving permit.

In-Town Driving
Roads can be confusing, so it may be best to rent a GPS system. City speed limits are generally 50 kph, while open roads are 100 kph and highways are 130 kph. It can be difficult to get directions from locals, particularly if you do not speak German. Be sure to pull over in a safe location if you need to consult your map.

The Autobahn
The Autobahn is where you will want to spend most of your time. There is no upper speed limit, so have fun! Keep these safety and courtesy tips in mind, however:

• The left lane is for passing only. Drive in the right lane. When passing, move as quickly as safely possible, or you will be tailgated.
• Use common sense. Do not stop, park, back up or attempt U-turns. If you miss your exit, go on to the next one.
• Merge smoothly and speedily. Your Mercedes will accelerate and handle well, so give it the chance to its job. Do not balk on the entrance ramp.
• A few sections do have posted speed limits, so keep an eye out. If you see a speed limit sign, take it seriously.
• If you are at the back of a traffic jam, turn on your hazard lights to warn approaching drivers.

Driving in Germany in a rented Mercedes vehicle is a real pleasure. The above tips will help to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable trip.
