Mercedes-Benz Amphibious Car?
Well, it’s not quite an amphibious car. But according to a local news story out of Key West, Florida, a group of Cuban refugees recently turned a Mercedes into a boat.
Although the article does not mention the type of Mercedes vehicle that was used, the story is a testament to both the determination and willpower of the Cuban people, and the strength and resilience of Mercedes cars.
The car-turned-boat successfully transported 24 refugees on the 90 mile ocean journey. The group washed ashore across from the Key West Airport, according to the news report. A wedding photographer in the area was able to snap photos of the vehicle as it was being hauled away.
Since the Clinton era, the United States has maintained a wet foot dry foot policy on refugees from Cuba. This means that if potential refugees are discovered in the water en route to the United States, they can be transported back to Cuba. However, if they are able to successfully make it to American soil, then they will be allowed to stay.
The group’s arrival took place on the eve of major changes in Cuba, just before dictator Fidel Castro made a public statement indicating his plan to step down. Castro’s brother, Raul, is taking control of the country. It is too soon to say whether Raul Castro will continue to follow his brother’s lead, or what the future may hold regarding the United States’ policies toward Cuba.
