Mercedes Announces Hybrid Vehicles for 2009

May 13, 2008 | | Comments 0

Mercedes HybridIn the past few weeks, hybrid vehicles have begun flying out of dealerships faster than they can be restocked. Experts mark this as the “tipping point,” when Americans have finally given up their love affair with gas guzzling cars and SUVs in the wake of ever-escalating gas prices. As prices top $4 per gallon in some areas, it is easy to see why highly fuel-efficient hybrids, some of which can average more than 50 miles per gallon, would be attractive to buyers.

Consumers are not the only ones who are taking notice. In recent years, Mercedes-Benz has shied away from hybrid technology, preferring instead to focus on clean-burning diesel, particularly in its new environmentally friendly BlueTEC vehicles. However, diesel prices have now outstripped gasoline prices, nearing $5 per gallon in some regions. Despite the vehicles’ superior fuel economy, many are afraid to purchase diesel vehicles.

In response to the changing marketplace, Mercedes has begun to embrace the hybrid revolution. The company recently announced plans for a 2009 mild hybrid version of its well-known flagship S Class. A fully hybrid M Class version should appear by the end of 2009.

The company also sees potential for the use of lithium ion batteries throughout its fleet in coming years. For example, starters and traditional car batteries may someday be replaced with lithium ion. However, such plans are currently in the very early concept stages.

It appears that hybrid vehicles are here to stay. Some consumers are skeptical of what they see as new and untested technology, despite the fact that hybrids have been available in the United States since 2000. Increasingly, however, consumers are turning to this practical and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional vehicles. If you would like to learn more about Mercedes vehicles, including the upcoming hybrid alternatives, we invite you to stop by Mercedes Benz – Fort Washington, PA, your Philadelphia Mercedes dealers, or your Mercedes dealers – Wilmington.
