MercedesTechnology is a funny thing. A breakthrough new gadget is announced, and we are skeptical at first: Will it work? Is it reliable? Why do I need it? Is it worth the money? Soon we decide to give the new item a chance, and very quickly we start to wonder how we ever lived without it. Computers, PDAs and cell phones are just three of today’s must-haves that we never even imagined 30 years ago. GPS is another. Once we discovered the convenience and time savings of GPS units, we couldn’t imagine ever living without them.

Garmin has become one of the best known and most trusted names in GPS. The company has been creating quality navigational devices since 1989, and has a long history of partnership with Mercedes-Benz. Garmin recently announced that the partnership will continue with a brand-new, third generation unit that will be included in all new Mercedes A, B and C Class vehicles in Europe.

Garmin calls the new system nuvi 760. Mercedes calls it the StreetPilot III. Whatever name you prefer, it is designed to be more user friendly than ever before. Wired directly into the car’s electronics, the system features a 4.3” widescreen that is easy to see even in glare. Voice instructions automatically mute the car’s radio, and come through loud and clear over the car’s speaker system.

Advanced features include traffic avoidance, BlueTooth hands-free calling, an extensive POI database and even a “Where Am I?” feature that helps drivers get their bearings and find nearby police stations, hospitals and even gas stations.

The unit can also log a vehicle’s location. Simply pop the unit out and slide it into a pocket or purse, and then let it guide you back to your parking spot.

The new StreetPilot III is a wonderful addition to Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Slim, portable and packed with features, it is the sort of device that you will wonder how you ever lived without.
