Shipping Your Mercedes Overseas

January 21, 2008 | | Comments 0

MercedesIf you will be traveling or permanently relocating overseas, you may wonder about taking your car with you. While renting a car or buying one abroad are always options, many people feel more comfortable having their own vehicles along. Shipping your car may not be as expensive as you might think. Here is what you should know about shipping your vehicle.

Car shipping services are available to virtually any country in the world. Each country sets its own laws regarding car importation, so it is important that you contact the consulate in the country of your choice well in advance of your travel date.

In general, shipping will require three copies of both the front and back of your car title. If there is a lien on the vehicle, you will need a notarized statement from the lien holder giving you permission to transport the vehicle internationally.

Each shipping company sets its own fees and policies, so be sure to check around for the best deal. When comparing prices, it is important to get detailed cost breakdowns from each carrier. You will need catastrophic insurance to guard against such possibilities as the ship sinking, which may be included in the charges of some companies but not others. You will also need to pay customs and importation charges, and other set fees to both the American and foreign governments. Again, some companies may include these fees in their quotes, while others consider these to be separate fees.

Although most shipping companies can make arrangements up to two weeks in advance, it is highly recommended that you make arrangements as soon as possible. Waiting until the last minute may result in unnecessary delays. In general it will take a week to ten days to receive your car, although this may vary widely according to your final destination.

Shipping your Certified Mercedes overseas is an excellent option. Although sometimes pricey, shipping your car will allow you the peace of mind of driving your own vehicle while abroad. Check around to find the best deal and you may find that shipping is less expensive than you think.
