Making It Through Your First Road Rally

February 14, 2008 | | Comments 0

Road RallyYesterday, we discussed the basics that any new road rallyist must know. Today, we will get into the finer details that are critical to rally success. Here is what you should know about following clues and staying on track.

Main Road Determinants
You will likely spend most of your first road rally lost. This is normal and to be expected. If you understand how to interpret your clues, however, you can use them to help get back on track. Road rally instructions include a set of Main Road Determinants (MRDs). These are not technically clues, but rules that should be followed throughout the rally to keep yourself on course. Remember that if a route instruction (clue) sends you in the same direction that an MRD would have you go, then that movement does not satisfy the clue. For example, if the MRD says to turn left at T intersections, and your next clue says to turn left, that will indicate the next left after the T.

How Do I Know if I’m Lost?
If you cannot execute a mileage based instruction at the exact mileage indicated (corrected for your calibration factor), then you are no longer on track. Another indicator is reaching an intersection for which no MRD or clue exists. At that point, turn around and go back to the last place that you knew you were correct.

Speed
Calculating your average speed is critical in order to avoid penalties. Some rally experts suggest driving at the suggested speed plus 10% to allow for stops, traffic lights and turns. As you get further into rallying, you may wish to invest in computer equipment that will help to calculate your actual average speed. Watch your clues carefully for speed changes.
