Insuring a Vintage Automobile

January 18, 2008 | | Comments 0

Vintage MercedesIf you own a vintage Mercedes or other classic car, one of your most important decisions is how to insure the vehicle. If you do not drive the car on a regular basis, or need insurance that will cover its transportation to and from specialty car events, you may need specialized insurance.

Some traditional car insurance companies will also insure vintage automobiles. You may need to meet certain requirements, such as a minimum age, and may also need to have a primary car, such as your Certified Mercedes, insured with the same company. Often there are additional restrictions on the use of the vintage car, such as driving only to and from certain activities, and perhaps a maximum limit on its mileage per year.

Although the requirements can be strict, insuring your vintage car through a traditional insurance carrier can have several important advantages. You may be able to get a lower rate on the insurance premiums. You will typically have access to the insurance carrier’s 24 hour toll free number. You can work with an agent with whom you are familiar.

However, traditional car insurance carriers may not meet your needs. Several companies exist solely to insure vintage vehicles. If your car is rare or expensive, a specialty insurance company may be the best way to get adequate coverage. One of the major problems with insuring classic cars through traditional companies is that traditional insurers tend to assume a level of depreciation that is valid for standard cars but does not apply to classics. Specialty insurers may also offer more attractive options for those who will frequently transport the cars to overseas events.

As when shopping for any type of insurance, it is important to take your time in searching for vintage car insurance. Obtain quotes from several companies, but do not decide solely on price. Compare the reputation and quality of those on your list, and choose the company that is right for you.
