Heading to Florida? Catch a Space Shuttle Launch
For many people, seeing a space shuttle launch up close would be a dream come true. Actually making it happen, however, can be daunting. Only a limited number of tickets are made available to the general public, and are relatively high priced. Tickets generally sell out quickly. Even if you are able to get tickets, there is always the possibility that the launch will be scrubbed or delayed. For many people, viewing the launch from the Space Center is worth the trouble. However, if you are unable or unwilling to obtain official launch tickets, there is another way.
Space shuttle launches are easily viewed from all over Central Florida. The closer you can get, the better the view. The night before a launch, many people simply load up their cars with blankets and pillows and head in the direction of the Space Center. Launch Day becomes a sort of street party as those who have camped in their cars hang out, talk, tailgate and prepare for the launch.
While hundreds of people do this on a regular basis, there are a few things that first-timers should keep in mind. Here are a few tips to staying safe, legal and healthy for Launch Day.
Forget Making It to the Space Center
For security reasons, no one is permitted anywhere on the grounds of the Space Center on Launch Day unless they hold Launch Day tickets. Additionally, hardcore launch aficionados tend to congregate as close as possible to the Space Center, sometimes days in advance. Resign yourself to heavy traffic and long delays, and resolve to simply make it as close as possible.
Park Safely
Unbelievably, many tourists stop their vehicles literally in the middle of interstate traffic lanes to get out and watch the shuttle take off. This is both highly illegal and extremely dangerous. Find a safe place to park the night before the launch is to take place. Respect private property. For the best results, look for gatherings of other launch viewers and ask their permission to join.
Stay Hydrated and Fed
Spending the night in the car can be quite an adventure. However, once you park for the night you will be unable to leave again for fear of losing your spot. Pack a cooler and perhaps a camping stove to remain fed and watered all night and throughout the next day.
Stay Comfortable
Despite the street party atmosphere, there will be times that are boring or uncomfortable. Wear loose-fitting clothes and shoes that are easy to slip on and off. Bring plenty of pillows and blankets, along with books and music to pass the time.
Have Fun
Camping out for a shuttle launch is an exciting and highly unique experience. Follow the tips above to remain healthy, legal and comfortable, and then relax and soak it all in.
