Even More Money-Saving Travel Tips
This week we have focused on ways to save money while traveling. Today we have a few suggestions on saving money on food and transportation.
Food Savings
One of the most exciting parts of a road trip is sampling the local cuisine. However, restaurants can take a big chunk out of the travel budget. Save money by dining at your must-visit restaurants for lunch rather than dinner. Lunch portions are smaller and correspondingly less expensive. Some restaurants even put out an all you can eat buffet at lunchtime.
Consider ordering two salads and sharing an entrée. Portion sizes have grown at an unprecedented rate in the past several years. Not only will you save money, but you can help avoid vacation weight gain as well.
Have a picnic in the park. Many cities are justifiable proud of their reclaimed downtown areas. Purchase fresh ingredients at a hip local market, and then carry them to a local park. Sit on a bench or a blanket and enjoy the fresh air while consuming a gourmet sandwich at a fraction of the price. You are likely to meet friendly locals doing the same. Or if you prefer not to make your own sandwich, buy one from a street vendor instead.
Transportation Savings
Take the time to learn about local transportation options in your city of choice. Parking your car downtown in many cities can be frightfully expensive. So why not leave the car at the hotel and travel like a local? In some cities taxis are cheap and plentiful. In others, the subway is your best bet. Many tourist areas have sightseeing buses or trams with unlimited on and off privileges, allowing you to cover a lot of ground for just a few dollars.
