Enhanced Driver Licenses – What You Should Know
If you travel internationally, you may already be aware of the enhanced border-tightening procedures that are now being implemented. As a general rule, those who travel to international destinations must carry a passport. However, borders have always been somewhat less restricted in regards to Canada, Mexico and many Caribbean destinations. While those borders are also being tightened, United States citizens have additional options for proving their citizenship. New passport cards are being offered as a smaller and less expensive alternative for those who are traveling only to specified destinations, and only by road, rail or sea.
Travel Benefits
Residents of certain border states will soon be able to use their driver licenses as identification in lieu of passport cards. As part of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, those who carry enhanced driver licenses will qualify for this program. So far, only Washington state has developed a suitable license, although New York, Vermont, Arizona and possibly Texas are expected to follow suit.
Real ID
Real ID is the latest in a wave of anti-terrorism measures. New radio frequency detection chips will be embedded in certain identification documents. These chips will then be used to access a database that contains citizenship and other identifying information. The chips will eventually be required in state-issued driver licenses, although currently most states have applied for extensions. Real ID-compliant identification cards will eventually be required at airports, sea ports and federal buildings.
The Bottom Line
Currently, enhanced driver licenses are being developed by border states to assist with cross-border transit. Eventually, these licenses will be on the list of acceptable documentation for entering federal buildings and other matters of national security. The technology is proving difficult for states to implement, so it is unlikely that most people will see enhanced driver licenses in the near future. Eventually, however, taking your Certified Mercedes to Canada may again be as easy as presenting your driver license.
