Heading to Florida? Catch a Space Shuttle Launch
For many people, seeing a space shuttle launch up close would be a dream come true. Actually making it happen, however, can be daunting. Only a limited number of tickets are made available to the general public, and are relatively high priced. Tickets generally sell out quickly. Even if you are able to get tickets, there is always the possibility that the launch will be scrubbed or delayed. For many people, viewing the launch from the Space Center is worth the trouble. However, if you are unable or unwilling to obtain official launch tickets, there is another way.
Space shuttle launches are easily viewed from all over Central Florida. The closer you can get, the better the view. The night before a launch, many people simply load up their cars with blankets and pillows and head in the direction of the Space Center. Launch Day becomes a sort of street party as those who have camped in their cars hang out, talk, tailgate and prepare for the launch.
While hundreds of people do this on a regular basis, there are a few things that first-timers should keep in mind. Here are a few tips to staying safe, legal and healthy for Launch Day.
Forget Making It to the Space Center
For security reasons, no one is permitted anywhere on the grounds of the Space Center on Launch Day unless they hold Launch Day tickets. Additionally, hardcore launch aficionados tend to congregate as close as possible to the Space Center, sometimes days in advance. Resign yourself to heavy traffic and long delays, and resolve to simply make it as close as possible.
Park Safely
Unbelievably, many tourists stop their vehicles literally in the middle of interstate traffic lanes to get out and watch the shuttle take off. This is both highly illegal and extremely dangerous. Find a safe place to park the night before the launch is to take place. Respect private property. For the best results, look for gatherings of other launch viewers and ask their permission to join.
Stay Hydrated and Fed
Spending the night in the car can be quite an adventure. However, once you park for the night you will be unable to leave again for fear of losing your spot. Pack a cooler and perhaps a camping stove to remain fed and watered all night and throughout the next day.
Stay Comfortable
Despite the street party atmosphere, there will be times that are boring or uncomfortable. Wear loose-fitting clothes and shoes that are easy to slip on and off. Bring plenty of pillows and blankets, along with books and music to pass the time.
Have Fun
Camping out for a shuttle launch is an exciting and highly unique experience. Follow the tips above to remain healthy, legal and comfortable, and then relax and soak it all in. Your Certified Mercedes is an excellent shuttle launch vehicle, providing enough room to spread out and sleep in comfort, yet remaining small enough to fit into tight spaces. Don’t forget your camera!

Under the Hood of the Redesigned Mercedes SLK
Yesterday we took a look at the exterior and interior features of the newly redesigned Mercedes-Benz SLK. Today we will look under the hood to discover even more enhancements.
The SLK class vehicles are available with a range of engines: four cylinder, six cylinder and the familiar eight cylinders in the SLK 55 AMG. However, all three engines have undergone tweaking to achieve lower emissions as well as lower fuel consumption. Of the three, it is the V6 that has undergone the most extensive rehab.
The SLK’s new V6 sport engine is capable of achieving 305 horsepower at 6500 rpm. Torque has also been enhanced, now achieving 360 Nm at 4900 rpm. This was made possible by raising maximum rpm to 7200, replacing the intake manifold, increasing the compression ratio and heavily modifying the valve gear.
In harmony with the SLK’s new 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission, the engine triggers double declutching during downshifting, limiting load-alteration effects and providing a satisfying engine noise. Despite the heavy modifications, however, the V6 sport engine considerably cuts fuel consumption, down to only 9.2 liters per 100 km when paired with the 7G-TRONIC transmission.
If the 7G-TRONIC is not your transmission of choice, you can select the 5 speed automatic transmission or the powerful 7G-TRONIC Sport version instead. Among other features, the 7G-TRONIC Sport features shift paddles on the steering wheel.
Available as an option is Mercedes’ newly developed direct steer system. Direct steer dispenses with the complicated sensors and other electronics of the old speed sensitive steering in favor of a purely mechanical system that changes the steering gear ratio in response to changes in steering angle. The new system provides optimally-tuned steering in all conditions at all speeds.
The newly redesigned Mercedes-Benz SLK features a host of new and exciting under-hood features. Drop by our local dealership for even more information on the new SLK, and stick around to test drive our already-available Mercedes vehicles.

Want to Camp Without the Tent? Consider a T@B
The T@B trailer is truly unique, even among teardrop shaped camping trailers. The T@B is the perfect solution for singles or couples who want to try camping but are reluctant to sleep in a tent. While most RV trailers can be pulled only by high capacity vehicles, the T@B is so lightweight that it can even be maneuvered by hand. Yet the trailer features all the comforts of home. Here is what you should know about this amazing trailer.
The T@B is designed to comfortably sleep two adults. A range of floor plans are available, allowing you to choose the layout that is best for you. A popular floor plan is based on a large, 5-seater U-shaped dinette, which allows you to invite friends over for dinner or games. At night, the dinette easily converts to a queen size bed. However, other layouts provide more floor space and/or storage. The most unique design moves the galley kitchen to the exterior, hidden behind a sliding wall.
The basic T@B features only a sink and cooktop. However, optional features include a small refrigerator or five day ice chest and a port a potty. Factory installed air conditioning and heating are also available.
If you require a bit more space, consider T@B’s big brother, the T@DA. The T@DA is basically an elongated T@B, with space to sleep four adults. The kitchen is expanded a bit, featuring a refrigerator along with the sink and cooktop. A microwave and second refrigerator are available as options. The T@DA also includes an integrated bathroom with a built-in toilet and optional shower.
Whether you choose the T@B or the larger T@DA, your Certified Mercedes should be up to the challenge. Of course, it is important to consult your owners manual to determine the towing capacity of your specific vehicle, but the trailers are designed to be towed by cars. For those who are intrigued by camping but hate the thought of tents, these trailers offer a unique and exciting alternative.

The SLK was first introduced in 1996, and rapidly climbed to the top of its class. The last redesign, in 2004, added a host of new features that further enhanced the vehicle’s performance and popularity. This year’s redesign adds a host of sporty features and new technologies that are sure to excite Mercedes lovers around the world.
The exterior features an even more pronounced V shape, with a redesigned front bumper. The rear has also been redesigned, with an enhanced sporty look emphasized by AMG-style darkened, tail lights and trapezoidal exhaust. The new, larger rearview mirrors feature arrow-shaped LED indicators.
Inside, the cockpit has been carefully optimized for driver comfort. An all-new three spoke sport steering wheel features numerous multi-function buttons for easy operation, while the newly redesigned instrument cluster is noticeably enhanced. The optional interface allows drivers to integrate the iPod or other personal mobile device into the system. The enhanced audio and telematics allow Mercedes to offer the optional LINGUATRONIC voice control system for the first time ever in SLK class vehicles. Finally, the optional Harman Kardon Logic7 sound system provides crystal clear surround sound even with the top open.

Car Camping
For many people, the idea of camping conjures up bad memories of childhood group trips. Sleeping in the mud, leaky tents, and endless supplies of mystery meat are not high on many people’s list of enjoyable vacation activities. However, camping in adulthood can be far different from the campouts of childhood. Here’s what you should know about the wonderful world of car camping.
Drive to Your Campsite
Your Certified Mercedes can take you all the way to your campsite. At many developed campgrounds, a paved or gravel road winds through the campground, passing directly in front of each site. The sites are cleared and well-developed, offering a gravel or paved driveway for your vehicle and a comfortable, level designated spot for your tent.
Electricity and Water
Most developed campgrounds offer campsites with electricity and water at the site. Be sure to bring an outdoor extension cord and power strip, as there are generally only two outlets located on a pole. You will, of course, want to protect your electronics by keeping them inside the tent. You can run the extension cord out through the tent’s front door. Just be sure to zip the tent door as far closed as possible.
The water will, of course, be cold. Nonetheless, it is potable tap water that can be heated for cooking or used as-is for drinking water, brushing teeth and freshening up.
Bath Houses
Depending on the campground, bath houses range from primitive to luxurious. However, at a minimum, most developed campgrounds now provide flush toilets, hot showers and reasonable cleanliness. Be sure to carry your own hand soap and shower necessities. A spare roll of toilet paper is always a good idea, as some campgrounds are not restocked as often as they should be.
Camping Comfort
Car camping eliminates the need to carry your belongings on your back. Therefore, feel free to live it up with all the modern amenities. Campers often bring air mattresses (don’t forget the pump!), portable televisions, propane stoves and other luxuries to make camp life smooth and comfortable. Look for a wide range of high-tech modern camping equipment at your local outdoors or sporting goods supplier.
Car camping and modern amenities have truly opened up the world of camping for many adults. If you are looking for something to do one weekend, why not consider loading up your Certified Mercedes and heading out to the country?

Introducing the New 2009 Mercedes SL63 AMG
The inside scoop on the new SL 63 AMG was recently released ahead of schedule on AMG’s official website. The new design provides innumerable enhancements in both design and technology, creating a car that sets a new standard in sportiness and luxury.
The SL63 AMG is even sportier-looking than the redesigned SL standard. The AMG-issued hood with telltale bulge, spoiler lip and air outlets that blend with the body color are just a few of the elements that make the vehicle’s exterior truly stand out. Additional features include a gloss black grille, matte silver AMG trim panels and darkened bi-xenon taillights and headlamps.
The interior features a special sport steering wheel and ultra-plush leather AMG seats. Carbon fiber trim and stainless steel door panels, along with an upgraded instrument cluster, enhance the luxurious feel of the car’s interior.
The AMG Speedshift MCT seven-speed transmission with race start function effortlessly handles the 6.3 liter V8 engine’s incredible 525 horsepower. Specially tuned speed-sensitive steering and a high speed braking system provide a high level of control even at high speeds. Nonetheless, the car’s power can be reigned in by a three-stage Electronic Stability Program. However, those who want ultimate control can select the ESP’s Sport mode or override the system altogether.
Mercedes-Benz has not yet announced a release date, availability information or pricing for the SL63 AMG. Of course, we will bring you new information as it is received. In the meantime, however, why not stop by our local Mercedes dealership? You may just be surprised by the technologies that are available in Mercedes vehicles today.

Introducing the Updated 2009 Mercedes SL
The Mercedes-Benz SL has long been known as a leader in its class. Combining elegance, luxury and power, the SL is beloved by both sports car lovers and luxury aficionados. The latest revamp focuses primarily on the vehicle’s sportiness, without sacrificing the luxuriousness for which the SL is known.
The 2009 SL is available with a variety of engine choices. The basic V6 ranges from 231 hp to 316 hp. However, those who want even more power can select a V8 or even a jaw dropping 517 horsepower twin-turbo V12 instead.
The SL body has been slightly redesigned, particularly in the front end. A more prominent front bumper and grille are offset by CLS-style headlamps. Those headlamps are also technologically enhanced, featuring bi-xenon bulbs on every vehicle. An available option is the five-function Intelligent Light System. The system automatically detects changing conditions to switch between five modes: Motorway, Country, Cornering, Active and Enhanced Fog.
Another major technological enhancement is an improved COMAND control system. Bluetooth has been fully integrated, along with a new Universal Consumer Interface that handles full iPod integration.
Airscarf, which first debuted in the SLK class, provides a steady stream of warm air at head level, allowing driver and passenger comfort when driving with the top down in cold weather.
Inside the car, several improvements have been made as well. The instrument cluster has been completely redesigned. A new three-spoke steering wheel and improved seating complete the interior redesign. Customers can choose between two different leathers, five aluminum or wood trim choices and five different color combinations, increasing customization choices.
The SL is expected to become available in Europe in April. In the meantime, why not stop by our local dealership to check out the Mercedes-Benz vehicles already on the market? You will find many of the SL’s technologies in the vehicles of today.

Hit the Beach in Your Certified Mercedes
During the long, cold winter, it can be difficult to remember that beach weather will eventually arrive. Before you know it, however, the beaches will again be overrun with tourists and weekenders intent on catching some rays. If you will be heading to a locale with moderate weather, why not get a jump-start on summer with some beach driving? Well-known drivable beaches are located in Florida, North Carolina and other popular locations.
If you have never driven on the beach, there are a few things that you should know. It is not necessary to have a 4×4 or offroad vehicle. Your Certified Mercedes will do just fine. However, it is important to follow these basic tips.
Lower Your Tire Pressure – Although many beach drivers have no problems with their tires, lowering the tire pressure a bit will help you to get better traction on the sand.
Get a Permit – Some locales require a permit for beach driving. These can generally be obtained close to the beach, even at gas stations in some areas. There may be a nominal fee in some places.
Pack Your Emergency Equipment – Although it is highly unlikely that you will get stuck, it is always better to be safe than sorry. Tow chains, jumper cables, a small shovel and perhaps a pair of wooden boards can help you to get out of a dangerous or annoying situation.
Know the Law – Some beaches do not allow driving at night, during sea turtle nesting season or during high traffic seasons. Speed limits on the beach are typically very low. Some beaches do not allow cars to be left unattended. Make sure you know and follow all relevant laws, as beach police are often quick to write tickets.
Beach driving is a lot of fun and unlike sunbathing can be done even in cold weather. So the next time you find yourself in a beach town, why not take your Certified Mercedes for a drive?
