High Tech Car Gadgets Available Today

MercedesMany of the new high-tech gadgets and gizmos for cars seem like the stuff of science fiction. Yet the advances are real, and are already available on high end models. Some, like Mercedes’ PRE-SAFE, are designed to improve safety. Others are fun and somewhat silly. Here is a car lover’s guide to some of the top advances in car technology.

Smart Safety Systems
PRE-SAFE is perhaps top in its class. Cars equipped with PRE-SAFE have the ability to take control of themselves to prepare for an impending crash. PRE-SAFE can close windows and sunroof, enact advanced seat belt tightening and force limiter systems, deploy airbags and even switch the vehicles seats to a safer position, all in the few seconds preceding an accident.

Electronic Stabilization helps drivers to maintain control. The electronic stability system works in tandem with braking assistance and other smart systems to limit the chances of skidding or spinning in emergency situations.

Attention Assist is a forthcoming system that will help drivers stay alert at the wheel. Lane change assistance, backup cameras and even parallel parking assistance are just a few of the other ways in which cars can help drivers to drive more safely.

Useful Accoutrements
Onboard integrated infotainment systems are becoming common. These systems often include monitors, DVD players, RCA jacks, satellite radios and Bluetooth capability, streamlined in tandem with onboard navigational systems featuring turn by turn directions.

LED lights have become popular alternatives to traditional bulbs. LEDs burn brighter, last longer and use less energy than traditional light bulbs.

Transmission Control
Although the old “four on the floor” manual gearshift is no longer popular, today’s next generation transmissions allow much more driver control than that of older automatics. Look for shifting paddles located near the steering wheel, suspension control switches and other gadgets that allow you to fully customize the driving experience.

If you want to see the latest in car technology for yourself, come by our convenient West Chester Mercedes, Mercedes Benz Fort Washington PA, or our Mercedes Benz Wilmington Delaware dealership. Though it sounds like science fiction, tomorrow’s high tech cars are available today.

Giving Certified Mercedes as Gift

MercedesA car is a wonderful gift for a child or grandchild, or perhaps another relative or friend. For many reasons, people are sometimes unable to afford a vehicle purchase, and giving the gift of a car is a terrific way to extend a helping hand. However, giving a gift of a car carries certain legal requirements that must be met. Additionally, if you own a Certified Pre-Owned Mercedes, you may wonder whether your benefits will transfer to the new owner. Here is what you need to know about giving a Certified Mercedes as a gift.

Tax requirements may vary, depending on the value of the vehicle and the state in which the transfer takes place. Contact a qualified tax specialist before giving the gift to determine the tax ramifications. In some cases, it may be better to sell the car to the recipient for a low cost. Your tax attorney will help you sort through the various possibilities and the legalities of each.

A Certified Mercedes comes with a manufacturer-backed warranty. The warranty allows you to obtain covered services at any dealer within the nationwide network. This warranty is fully transferable whether you sell the vehicle or give it as a gift.

Make sure that you understand the legalities of transferring your car to someone else as a gift, including the tax ramifications. Your certification and warranty will, however, transfer without a hitch. Just be sure to report the transfer to Mercedes.

Behind the Wheel of the Mercedes ML550

ML550In a recent edition of the Vail Trail, writer Andy Stonehouse took the 2008 Mercedes ML550 on a true backcountry expedition. While those with lesser vehicles found themselves stranded due to a heavy snowstorm, Stonehouse decided to put this heavyweight contender to the test. Here is a look at how the vehicle fared.

Stonehouse headed out into the canyons southwest of Denver, finding himself on snow and ice covered County Road 77 near Lake George. Stonehouse found the ML550’s V8 engine more than adequate, launching the vehicle from 0 to 60 in a respectable 5.5 seconds. The top speed on the ML550 is 135 mph.

Stonehouse noted that there was no loss of power when climbing steep hills, only a satisfying engine hum. Yet gas mileage was good, exceeding the estimated 18 mpg. The advanced all-wheel drive and traction control system prevented the loss of control even in winter weather conditions, although Stonehouse recommended upgrading to winter tires for even better control.

The seven-speed transmission is equipped with numerous optional controls. Downhill speed regulations functions as a sort of cruise control, preventing the creeping acceleration often associated with downhill driving. An offroad switch and suspension height regulation allows the driver to further customize the driving experience. Wheel-mounted buttons allow the driver to control the transmission as needed.

In-cabin comfort was top notch, the heated leather seats and three zone heating system allowing Stonehouse to remain warm and comfortable throughout the drive. He also noted that the navigation system, instrument level computer and automatic backup camera came in handy, along with the front and back distance sensing lights.

If you are looking for a vehicle that will handle tough winter conditions, why not stop by our local Mercedes-Benz dealership to test drive the ML550 for yourself? Visit any of our locations, including West Chester Mercedes, Mercedes Benz Fort Washington PA, and Mercedes Benz of Wilmington DE.

Donating Car to Charity

MercedesIf you are replacing your car, you may wonder what to do with your old car. Sometimes trading in the car can net you a significant savings on your next car. However, if your previous car is not worth much on trade-in, or if you can get the price you want through other incentive programs, why not consider donating your old car to charity?

Numerous charities are dedicated to repairing unwanted vehicles for resale to raise money for their causes. The charities rely on donations from the American public. Here is what you should know about donating your car to charity.

A car donation is tax-deductible. You are responsible for valuating the car for tax purposes, although you must also receive a receipt from the charitable organization. If the vehicle is worth less than $5,000, you can use the Kelly Blue Book valuation. However, you must be certain to select the valuation that best represents the actual condition of your vehicle.

If the car is worth more than $5,000, you must receive an independent appraisal of the vehicle. You must also file a separate IRS form.

Some clearinghouse companies exist to manage car donations for various charities. These companies can make the task of donating a vehicle a bit less cumbersome. However, it is important that you take responsibility for ensuring that the vehicle is accurately valued and the proper paperwork is filed with the IRS. Do not turn these tasks over to the clearinghouse.

As tax law is complicated, it is highly recommended that you speak with a tax specialist for specific advice prior to donating your car. This will ensure that you follow all applicable laws and receive the tax deduction to which you are entitled.

When you purchase your Certified Mercedes, why not donate your previous car to charity? You will be doing a good deed and receiving a tax benefit at the same time. Looking for a new Mercedes? Using Your Vehicle in Business

MercedesIf you run a business, you may be able to claim certain tax benefits for using your Certified Mercedes as a part of that business. IRS regulations allow some expenses to be deducted if you meet specific criteria. Tax law is complex, and it is important to speak with a qualified tax professional before claiming any deductions. However, here is a general guide to using your vehicle in business.

Keep a Separate Mileage Record
If your vehicle is used at all for personal reasons, you will need to separately document your business use. Mileage logs can be easily purchased at any office supply store, or you may make your own. Write down the starting and ending mileage of every business-related trip. Only business mileage may be deducted for tax purposes.

Log Expenses
In most cases, you will have a choice on how to claim your deduction. Each year, the IRS sets a standard rate per mile. You may claim the standard mileage rate, or you may claim your actual expenses. However, in order to claim actual expenses, you must have written records and documentation of those expenses. Keep a written record and save every receipt. Your written log must be accounted for in your saved receipts.

Tax law is complex, and the above should not be taken as tax advice. Consult a tax specialist for specific advice that pertains to your situation. In general, however, if you use your Mercedes in your business, you may be able to claim certain tax benefits. Document everything carefully, especially your business-related mileage and your expenses, in order to present accurate records to the IRS.

California’s Hydrogen Highway on Hold

Hydrogen MercedesCalifornia governor Arnold Schwarzenegger had hoped to build a “hydrogen highway” through California by 2010. The project consisted of a series of 100 hydrogen fueling stations that would have made hydrogen-powered vehicles a practical choice. However, the project has hit a stumbling block that leads many to believe that it will never be a reality.

Three of the current stations have recently closed, while three companies that received state funding to build the stations have decided not to go ahead. This leaves the current number of stations at only 23, a far cry from the 100 that were once anticipated.

It is unclear exactly why companies are shuttering or refusing to build hydrogen fueling stations. What is clear, however, is that the decision greatly impacts the immediate future of hydrogen vehicles in California. One of the unbuilt stations, for example, was to act as a hub for a fleet of Mercedes-Benz hydrogen cars that are to be leased in Northern California next year. One of the closed stations provided fuel for county buses.

However, project organizers are not ready to throw in the towel. Mary Nichols, chairperson of the California Air Resources Board, has described the current situation as a “hiccup” in the plan. Hydrogen highway advocates are going through existing contracts to determine whether companies who have been awarded funds are obligated to go ahead with building, even if the funds were not accepted.

Mercedes has long been a leader in green engineering, pioneering innovative methods of reducing the impact of vehicles on the world’s environment. Although the hydrogen highway issues may temporarily impact Mercedes’ ability to proceed with the Northern California test marketing, Mercedes will find a way to succeed.

In the meantime, stop by our local Mercedes-Benz dealership to learn more about the hydrogen cars and test drive an environmentally friendly Mercedes that is right for you. We have three locations: WestChester Mercedes, Mercedes Benz Ft Washington PA, and Mercedes of Wilmington.

Mercedes-Benz C Class Draws Five Star Safety Rating

Mercedes C ClassEuro-NCAP crash testing has demonstrated what C Class owners have known for a long time: the vehicles are just as safe as they are reliable and fun to drive. The C Class body design is largely responsible for the top marks. Approximately 70% of the car’s body panels are constructed from state of the art high tech steel alloys that absorb and redistribute the forces of impact through the car’s body and away from the passenger compartment.

In the event of a crash, eight separate airbags work together to protect the driver and passengers. Crash responsive NECK PRO head restraints, seat belt tensioners and seat belt force limiters also help to keep the vehicle’s occupants safe.

Onboard safety systems can help to prevent accidents from occurring. The Mercedes C Class features Mercedes’ ESP Electronic Stability Program as well as the Brake Assist system. These two systems work together to help drivers maintain control of their vehicles in emergency situations.

The Mercedes C Class is the only car in its market segment to feature a proactive crash protection system. PRE-SAFE can detect potential accident situations and prepare the car and passengers for impact. Closing the sun roof and repositioning the car’s seats are just two of the ways that PRE-SAFE can reduce the accident’s forces on the car’s occupants.

If you would like to find out more about the C Class and perhaps take a test drive, come on down to our convenient local dealership to see this popular car for yourself. Visit any of our three locations: West Chester Mercedes, Mercedes Benz of Fort Washington PA, or Mercedes Benz Wilmington DE.

Shipping Your Mercedes Overseas

MercedesIf you will be traveling or permanently relocating overseas, you may wonder about taking your car with you. While renting a car or buying one abroad are always options, many people feel more comfortable having their own vehicles along. Shipping your car may not be as expensive as you might think. Here is what you should know about shipping your vehicle.

Car shipping services are available to virtually any country in the world. Each country sets its own laws regarding car importation, so it is important that you contact the consulate in the country of your choice well in advance of your travel date.

In general, shipping will require three copies of both the front and back of your car title. If there is a lien on the vehicle, you will need a notarized statement from the lien holder giving you permission to transport the vehicle internationally.

Each shipping company sets its own fees and policies, so be sure to check around for the best deal. When comparing prices, it is important to get detailed cost breakdowns from each carrier. You will need catastrophic insurance to guard against such possibilities as the ship sinking, which may be included in the charges of some companies but not others. You will also need to pay customs and importation charges, and other set fees to both the American and foreign governments. Again, some companies may include these fees in their quotes, while others consider these to be separate fees.

Although most shipping companies can make arrangements up to two weeks in advance, it is highly recommended that you make arrangements as soon as possible. Waiting until the last minute may result in unnecessary delays. In general it will take a week to ten days to receive your car, although this may vary widely according to your final destination.

Shipping your Certified Mercedes overseas is an excellent option. Although sometimes pricey, shipping your car will allow you the peace of mind of driving your own vehicle while abroad. Check around to find the best deal and you may find that shipping is less expensive than you think.

If you’re interested in purchasing a used or new Mercedes vehicle, please visit one of our three locations, at WestChester Mercedes, Mercedes Benz of Fort Washington PA, and our Mercedes dealer, Wilmington.
